Frog song on a wet run

It took a lot of internal convincing to get out in the rain and run today. There were a few rewards to be gained from this soggy run: For one, the roads were completely devoid of vehicles. Empty shiny pavement. Also, the feel of the puddle splashing on ankles. And then there were the sounds. […]

Son runnin’

Having my 7 year old son ask if he could run with me today brought the purest of pristine joy to the most profound depths of my soul. Then actually running with him while we chatted about cars and dinosaurs was phenomenal fun. It really was the definition of #runhappiness.

A dandy of a dedicated lion

One of my favourite things about running is the narrowed focus I often get when in the midst of a workout. Whether it’s a more in-tune sense of how my body is feeling or how I’m holding my posture, or whether it is a heightened eye that picks up on some minutiae in my surroundings, I […]

Fresh fuel, fresh mind

As a family who tries our best to be 100-mile dieters each summer, including our first summer of the challenge 8 years ago when we went all-in making sure that each ingredient we consumed was produced or grown within our radius for 4 months, this is one of our favourite times of the year.  From […]

Get your second-best foot forward

In our community, there really aren’t many instances of graffiti.  There are plenty of prime locations for a tag or Banksy-esque stenciled masterpiece, but for whatever reason, the sprayed signatures are quite uncommon in Lunenburg (and I might add that I like it that way!).  But this one: “Noting but the best” has stuck with […]

A run that sprouts, flowers

I had one of those runs yesterday that starts out like a breeze.  You know the ones.  Where you think, “Man! I feel bloody great!” I set out to do a quick and simple 4 or 5k as it was getting quite late and I wanted to fit in a run before the rain arrived. […]

Running to sky fire

Running toward a sky that’s on fire. Like a honey bee drawn to a field of clover. It’s a magnetic pull that floods the senses. And though I don’t make honey, I do get a sweet sense of fulfillment. #runhappiness

Finding motivation

Today is one of those late May days where the sun is out, it isn’t too hot or cold, there is a soft breeze, and all I want to do is sit in my backyard, hang out with my family, and have a cold beer.  I’m going to go for a run, but I know […]

Puddles are not obstacles

I rarely avoid them. I don’t break stride to go around. The spray from the dirt-asphalt-water mix when I splash right through a puddle is refreshing and wakes up the calves to a new sensation. It breaks the monotony. Quite simply: it’s #runhappiness. Potholes are a whole other hole though.  They are ankle-twister-extraordinaires. Avoidance is best.

Hecklers and the FHRITP idiocy

While out for a casual 5k waterfront jaunt Monday, on what was a calm, quiet, and beautiful evening in our picturesque seaside town, I happened to pass a group of 5 or so smokers outside a restaurant when one of them, in what can only be assumed as a nic-induced fit of idiocy, hurled in […]
